Voicewise and Huawei Italia – pilot research for Covid19
Voicewise has launched a clinical trial to explore the diagnosis and monitoring of COVID-19 at Castelli Hospital in Rome, the Technoscience Technological Park in Latina, and the Policlinico Fondazione San Matteo in Pavia.
This pilot project on voice biomarkers for COVID-19 continues Voicewise’s valuable collaboration with Huawei Technologies.
Huawei Italy has promptly provided the mobile devices needed for the study. Using Huawei smartphones and the dedicated Voicewise COVID-19 web app, patient voices can be recorded and collected safely and remotely, without any direct contact. Several latest-generation Huawei smartphones and tablets, with different features and performance levels, have been used for the research.
The main goal of the study is to determine whether COVID-19 infection can be identified through voice analysis using Voicewise’s specially developed AI algorithms. In addition, the study aims to assess the severity of the infection and monitor its progression, including during recovery after hospital discharge or during home isolation.
If successful, this research could open new possibilities for large-scale monitoring and prevention, especially in the post-lockdown “phase two” of the epidemic. Potential applications include screening at transport hubs (airports, railway stations, ports, and bus terminals), workplaces, schools, and healthcare facilities. The technology is designed to be scalable and applicable to a wide range of medical conditions.
Using smartphones as everyday tools for prevention, diagnostics, and health monitoring could provide a non-invasive, cost-effective solution. By combining the accuracy of medical research with the accessibility of widely available technology, this approach offers practical support for doctors and individuals—anywhere, anytime.
This innovative project represents a step forward in the digital transformation of healthcare, demonstrating the power of collaboration between academia and the private sector for the benefit of society.
